FILLINGS

Are fillings important?

A common form of tooth decay are cavities. They occur when foods containing carbohydrates get trapped between teeth and are fully removed while brushing and flossing. From there acidic byproducts create plaque which later dissolves tooth enamel.
The easiest way to to fix this is by getting fillings.
Fillings are used for a number of reasons, not only cavities!
For example, you might consider getting one if you experience an accidental damage.

A dental filling is made of of materials such as composite that resembles a real tooth colour. Back in the day were fillings made of silver amalgam but they’re not as common nowadays as they’re quite dark and therefore visible which is why most patients don’t choose it anymore.  They are very durable and can last up to 10-15 years.

Fillings are important because they prevent further damage that could lead to an infection and reduce sensitivity of the weakened tooth. By getting a filling you can fully restore its functionality. They also strengthen the tooth and reduce the possibility of cracking, chipping or breaking.

You might be wondering what needs to be done before getting one?

For starters, one of our dentists will begin the procedure by cleaning away the decay (usually with a drill). It prevents further damage from happening, then, it’s time to restore damaged part of the tooth by inserting the filling. It comes in paste form which is why it moulds so perfectly to the shape of cavity. Composites are placed in layers and each of them is ‘’cured’’ by using a bright ultraviolet light to speed up the procedure. It’s a relatively painless procedure, you might also get local anaesthetic to get you through it.

Here’s a few tips for the aftercare:

  • After the procedure, try not to chew on the numb side until anaesthesia wears off.
  • Don’t be worried if your teeth become sensitive to heat, cold or pressure during the recovery stage. It is normal and usually lasts only a few days.
  • If painful symptoms don’t improve, consult your dentist immediately.
  • If the cavity was large it might take slightly longer to fully recover.
  • You can go back brushing and flossing the same day.
